Challenge

A client in the Life Science industry was seeking authorization from the Danish Medicines Agency to commission their newest pharmaceutical warehouse. Traditional auditing methodologies for facility temperature regulation compliance is costly and time-consuming, often requiring several months to complete. Our client sought our CFD services to map the warehouse’s temperature distribution for both empty and filled conditions to reduce auditing time and fast-track commissioning.

Approach

We applied our validated CFD model to accurately predict temperature distribution and airflow in the warehouse. Executed with our established workflow and modeling procedure, developed through years of warehouse ventilation, temperature and airflow optimization, we mapped the warehouse’s temperature distribution and climatization with strategically placed measurement points. The simulation results were validated against data from the physical temperature mapping of the empty warehouse before extending to the filled state.

Result

The CFD simulations permitted our client to commission the storage facility, allowing the physical measurements for the filled warehouse configuration to be done with real products post-commissioning. Hot and cold spots, as well as airflow patterns, were accurately predicted, ensuring the warehouse met regulatory standards. This saved our client months of labor and meant they could start using their warehouse long before it would have been available with standard auditing methodologies.

Accelerating commissioning time

As our validated simulation models accurately quantified the temperature distribution and climatization quality of the warehouse, the client was able to commission the warehouse 2 months earlier and could perform final testing of the facility with real goods as opposed to dummy goods prior to commissioning.
